Transmission Line Design Engineer or Engineer-in-Training

About the role

AltaLink, which delivers electricity to millions of Albertans, is hiring a Transmission Line Design Engineer in its Project Development - Lines & Civil Engineering department in Calgary, reporting to the Manager, Lines & Civil Engineering. The role covers the design, engineering, project development and technical delivery of high-voltage transmission line facilities, from early scoping and conceptual development through detailed design, construction support, close-out and final acceptance. It suits experienced designers and engineers-in-training, and the title and role are adjusted to the applicant's experience.

Key responsibilities

• Prepare detailed calculations, studies, bills of material and design packages for capital, customer, Direct Assign and system projects.
• Prepare PLS-CADD models for design packages and existing line clearance evaluations.
• Complete line design packages for 69kV, 138kV, 240kV and 500kV assets, including rebuilds, modifications, greenfield lines, interconnections and emergency restoration.
• Lead preliminary line design, route and structure options, constructability review, material selection and design change resolution.
• Apply base geotechnical knowledge to foundation selection and coordinate with geotechnical consultants, civil designers, project managers and contractors.
• Review and approve technical drawings and specifications, and support construction execution and project close-out.
• Support engineering standards, code requirements (AEUC, CSA, ISO) and line optimization, rating and thermal assessments.
• Mentor junior engineers and EITs, and provide leadership support to the team.

Required profile

• Bachelor's degree in Mechanical, Civil or Electrical Engineering.
• EIT or Professional Engineer with APEGA, or qualifies for registration with APEGA.
• Proven ability to deliver complex transmission line designs from concept through close-out.
• Transmission line design experience is an asset.
