About the role
The Research Technician supports daily laboratory operations and fieldwork for the Department of Geography at McGill University. Working on‑site Monday to Friday, the technician ensures safe, efficient, and effective functioning of lab spaces, equipment, and related departmental needs.
Key responsibilities
- Maintain laboratory cleanliness, organization, and proper storage of materials.
- Monitor safety protocols, ensure WHMIS and Radiation Safety training compliance.
- Schedule student lab work, train graduate and undergraduate students on analytical instruments.
- Perform routine maintenance, calibration, and minor repairs of equipment such as gas chromatographs, pH and conductivity meters, DOC/TDN analyzers, and vacuum pumps.
- Manage chemical inventory, order supplies through MMP, and coordinate hazardous waste disposal.
- Support faculty and students during building service shutdowns and assist with equipment installation for thesis projects.
- Conduct sample analyses, soil extractions, elemental analysis, and assist with field equipment installation (e.g., micrometeorological towers, auto samplers).
Required profile
- Experience working in a research laboratory or similar scientific environment.
- Familiarity with safety regulations and laboratory best practices.
- Ability to train and supervise students and collaborate with faculty.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
