NSERC Tier 1 Canada Research Chair in Sustainable Functional Bioproducts

About the role

The Department of Wood Science at UBC seeks an internal faculty member to hold a NSERC Tier 1 Canada Research Chair focused on Sustainable Functional Bioproducts. The Chair will lead an internationally recognized research program and contribute to teaching and mentorship.

Key responsibilities

• Lead research on sustainable production, modification, assembly, processing, and application of functional bioproducts.
• Develop nanocellulose, renewable biocolloids, biopolymers, and related cellulose‑based materials for commercial‑ready products.
• Engage industry, community, and academic partners to translate research into impact.
• Mentor undergraduate, graduate, and post‑doctoral researchers and supervise HQP.
• Participate in departmental teaching and university service.

Required profile

• Full‑time tenured faculty in the Department of Wood Science, UBC.
• PhD with rank of Professor or Associate Professor (promotion to Professor expected).
• Internationally recognized leader in sustainable bioproduct research.
• Strong record of attracting and supervising graduate students and post‑doctoral fellows.
• Commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion in research and teaching.

Required skills

• Expertise in nanocellulose and renewable biocolloids.
• Knowledge of cellulose‑based films, fibers, hydrogels, aerogels, foams, and high‑performance composites.
• Experience translating materials research into commercial products.
• Ability to secure research funding and lead interdisciplinary teams.
