NSERC Tier 1 Canada Research Chair in Sustainable Functional Bioproducts

About the role

The Department of Wood Science at UBC seeks an internal faculty member to hold a NSERC Tier 1 Canada Research Chair focused on Sustainable Functional Bioproducts. The Chair will lead a world‑class research program and contribute to teaching and mentorship.

Key responsibilities

• Develop and lead an internationally recognized research program on sustainable production, modification, assembly, processing, and application of functional bioproducts.
• Collaborate with industry, community, and academic partners to translate research into commercial‑ready products.
• Mentor undergraduate, graduate, and postgraduate students and supervise post‑doctoral fellows.
• Participate in departmental teaching and university service activities.

Required profile

• Full‑time tenured faculty appointment in the Department of Wood Science at UBC.
• PhD with rank of Professor or Associate Professor, expected promotion to Professor within 1‑2 years.
• Demonstrated excellence in research, graduate/post‑doctoral supervision, and commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion.

Required skills

• Expertise in nanocellulose and renewable biocolloids.
• Knowledge of cellulose‑based films, fibers, hydrogels, aerogels, foams, and high‑performance composites.
• Experience translating laboratory research into commercial products.
