Technology Transfer Officer – University Research Commercialization

About the role

The Technology Transfer Officer supports the University’s mission to turn research breakthroughs into economic and social benefits. Working within the Industry Liaison Office, the officer evaluates, protects, and markets technologies originating from the physical sciences, engineering, and information technology fields.

Key responsibilities

• Assess university inventions for commercial potential by reviewing scientific and patent literature.
• Conduct market research to gauge economic viability and identify target industries.
• Collaborate with inventors and patent counsel to understand technical details and determine appropriate IP protection.
• Prepare comprehensive Technology Evaluation Reports for inventors and managers.
• Oversee the preparation and filing of IP documentation (patents, copyrights, trademarks) with Canadian and foreign offices.
• Assist patent agents throughout prosecution and draft provisional patent applications.
• Market evaluated technologies to local, national, and international partners.

Required profile

• Strong background in physical sciences, engineering, or information technology.
• Experience with technology assessment, market analysis, and intellectual property processes.
• Ability to communicate technical concepts clearly to inventors, legal counsel, and business stakeholders.
• Detail‑oriented and capable of managing multiple projects simultaneously.
