Software Engineer, Product (Co-op)

About the role

Bree is a consumer finance platform serving Canadians who live paycheck to paycheck, and it is looking for a Product Engineering Co-op to work on real customer-facing features across its backend and mobile apps. The co-op runs from January to August 2027 and lasts 8 months; co-ops are full members of the Engineering team, working alongside full-time engineers on production work, design discussions, code reviews, testing and releases.

Key responsibilities

• Build full-stack features with mentorship, from understanding the problem through implementation, testing and release.
• Work on TypeScript and Node.js backend services and React Native frontends, with team support as you learn the stack.
• Use AI development tools to move faster, while validating the code and user experience before shipping.
• Collaborate with Design, Product and CX on customer-facing improvements, then help review feedback after release.

Required profile

• Currently enrolled in a Computer Science, Software Engineering or related post-secondary programme, available for the full 8-month term.
• Experience building software through coursework, personal projects, internships, open source or student teams; a GitHub profile or portfolio is welcome.
• Foundational experience with JavaScript or TypeScript and interest in learning Node.js, React, React Native or APIs.
• Basic comfort with Git, debugging and testing; helpful but not required: exposure to mobile app development, release workflows, logging, performance debugging, analytics, experiments, event tracking or A/B tests.
• Interest in product thinking, clear communication and a thoughtful approach to using AI.

What we offer

• Compensation of $50-$70 CAD per hour, based on experience and interview performance, with offer matching.
• $250 monthly lunch stipend and $150 monthly transportation stipend, plus in-office amenities.

• Hybrid schedule: in-office on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday, with the option of free lunch on Tuesdays and Fridays; fully remote in January and most of February, then 1 day in office through March and 3 days from April 2027.
