Backend Engineering Co-op (TypeScript, Node.js)
bree · Toronto
Job description
About the role
Bree is a consumer finance platform serving Canadians who live paycheck to paycheck, and it is looking for a Backend Engineering Co-op for an 8-month term (January to August 2027). Co-ops are full members of the Engineering team: you will work on the same customer and business problems as full-time engineers, ship real production work and take part in design discussions, code reviews, testing and releases, with close mentorship.
Key responsibilities
- Build and improve backend services, APIs and integrations with mentorship from experienced engineers.
- Contribute production changes in TypeScript and Node.js services, including AWS Lambda-based workflows.
- Write and improve automated tests, and help investigate and resolve issues in staging or production.
- Use AI development tools to speed up work, validating code, tests and behaviour before shipping.
- Collaborate with Engineering, Product, Design and CX to understand requirements and test the user-facing impact of your work.
- Document what you learn and contribute small improvements to developer experience and engineering practices.
Required profile
- Currently enrolled in a Computer Science, Software Engineering or related post-secondary programme, available for the full 8 months.
- Foundational experience with TypeScript or JavaScript, Node.js and building APIs through coursework, internships or personal projects.
- Evidence of projects where you designed, built or maintained software; a GitHub profile, portfolio or course project is great.
- Interest in using AI development tools responsibly, with care for testing, code quality and security.
- A learning mindset, clear communication and enthusiasm for Bree's mission.
Required skills
- TypeScript or JavaScript
- Node.js
- Building APIs
- Familiarity with cloud services, serverless systems or Infrastructure as Code is helpful but not required
What we offer
- Compensation of $50-$70 per hour CAD, based on experience and interview performance; offer matching is possible.
- $250 monthly lunch stipend and $150 monthly transportation stipend.
- In-office amenities and regular mentorship and feedback.
- Opportunity for a new-grad full-time offer.
- Hybrid schedule: in-office on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday, with the option of free lunch on Tuesdays and Fridays; fully remote in January and most of February, then 1 day in office through March and 3 days from April 2027.
