Software Engineer, Frontend and Mobile
bree · Toronto
Job description
About the role
Bree is a consumer finance platform serving over half of the Canadian population living paycheck to paycheck, offering short-term credit. It is looking for a Software Engineer with a strong mobile and frontend focus to own customer-facing features across its React Native application, from discovery through release and follow-up. The role works closely with Product, Design, CX and other engineers, and covers frontend code, API contracts and backend dependencies.
Key responsibilities
- Own mobile and frontend features from product discovery through public release.
- Work on a TypeScript/Node serverless stack (AWS Lambda, API Gateway, SQS) and React Native frontends.
- Turn early ideas and mockups into usable experiences with Product and Design.
- Make pragmatic decisions in ambiguous situations and unblock yourself and others.
- Instrument shipped code with logging, metrics and alerts, and add tests to keep releases stable.
- Refactor opportunistically and pay down tech debt without slowing delivery.
- Own release readiness: staging, TestFlight, Google Play, release notes, smoke testing and production monitoring.
Required profile
- Experience shipping customer-facing mobile or web products in a startup or fast-moving environment.
- Strong TypeScript and React Native experience, or deep React experience with the ability to move quickly into React Native.
- Understanding of component design, state management, networking, navigation and frontend architecture.
- An AI-native development approach, using modern tools throughout implementation, debugging, testing and review.
- Product judgment to turn a rough idea into a scoped, high-leverage release.
- Clear communication, ownership and steady composure when weighing engineering tradeoffs.
Nice to have
- Expo, EAS, over-the-air updates or similar React Native tooling.
- Observability (structured logging, tracing, performance profiling).
- Analytics and experimentation (event models, simple A/B tests).
- OSS contributions or public write-ups about shipped projects.
What we offer
- Competitive compensation for top performers.
- Health, dental and vision benefits.
- $1,500 one-time setup and $500 per year for learning and home-office equipment.
- $1,500 annual wellness stipend.
- Free lunch in the office daily and a $250/month stipend for working from home days.
- Fully remote during winter.
- $150/month commuter benefits and parental leave.
- 20 annual PTO days plus unlimited sick days and an annual retreat.
