Senior Hardware Developer – Electronics Prototyping & EMC
avidbots · Kitchener
Job description
About the role
Avidbots is seeking a senior hardware developer to turn open questions about the next generation of autonomous floor‑scrubbing robots into fast, working hardware. The role sits in R&D, ahead of production, and focuses on rapid prototyping, debugging, and delivering defensible recommendations.
Key responsibilities
- Turn concepts into evaluation kits, breadboards, and quick‑turn PCBs, then own end‑to‑end bring‑up and debug cycles measured in weeks.
- Design and layout multilayer schematics and PCBs across analog, digital, and power domains, including control boards, sensor interfaces, and motor‑control units.
- Develop EMC solutions from the first revision: stack‑up planning, grounding strategies, filtering, shielding, and in‑house pre‑compliance testing.
- Run trade studies and bench experiments to settle architecture decisions with measured data.
- Partner with mechanical engineers on harness routing, enclosure shielding, and chassis grounding.
Required profile
- B.Sc. in Electrical Engineering or equivalent with 7+ years of hardware design experience in robotics, safety‑critical, medical, aerospace, or automotive fields.
- Proven ownership of a product through EMC certification, including chamber testing, root‑cause analysis, and remediation.
- Hands‑on lab experience assembling and reworking fine‑pitch and BGA boards, building test fixtures, and using standard instrumentation.
Required skills
- Schematic capture and multilayer PCB layout (mixed‑signal and power).
- EMC design and certification (CISPR/EN 55014, CISPR 11, IEC 61000‑4, FCC Part 15).
- Lab instrumentation: DMM, oscilloscope, function generator, power supply, spectrum analyzer, near‑field probes.
- Signal‑integrity and EMI mitigation techniques (stack‑up, filtering, shielding).
- Functional safety standards (IEC 61508, IEC 63327, IEC 60335‑2‑72) and safety‑analysis methods.
- Proficiency with Altium (or comparable ECAD) and basic SI/PI simulation.
- Embedded scripting/firmware basics (C, Python) for prototype bring‑up.
