Relief Worker

About the role

The Relief Worker provides on‑call support to ensure the smooth operation of The Stop Community Food Centre’s Drop‑in, Food Bank, kitchen and related programs when regular staff are absent. This casual position works closely with a diverse team of staff and volunteers to maintain a safe, inclusive environment for participants.

Key responsibilities

• Assist with daily operations of the drop‑in, food bank, kitchen, café, and community gardens.
• Maintain program logs, inventory records, and clean work areas.
• Prepare food and beverage service for breakfast and lunch, including coffee and simple food prep.
• Support front‑desk intake, issue numbers, file paperwork, and handle basic administrative tasks.
• Receive deliveries, store items properly, and ensure compliance with health and safety policies.
• Provide directions to volunteers, help resolve conflicts, and intervene in crises as needed.
• Refer participants to community resources and answer questions about services.
• Deliver courteous customer service aligned with anti‑discrimination and anti‑harassment policies.

Required profile

• At least one year of experience working or volunteering in a social‑service setting.
• Self‑motivated, reliable, and able to work effectively as part of a team.
• Strong interpersonal, time‑management and communication abilities.
• Knowledge of local social services and community resources.
• Physical ability to lift up to 50 lb and remain on feet for extended periods.
