Paralegal

About the role

Hydro One is seeking a Paralegal to join its legal team in Toronto. Working under the direction of a Supervisor or senior solicitors, you will analyze, assess, prosecute and defend liability and damage claims across the Superior Court of Justice and Small Claims Court jurisdictions.

Key responsibilities

• Receive and evaluate claim assignments, ensuring they fall within jurisdictional limits and limitation periods.
• Prepare and file court forms, pleadings, affidavits of documents, and other required filings.
• Supervise agents and law students during court appearances and pre‑trial preparations.
• Conduct legal research, interview witnesses, and organize evidence for trial or settlement negotiations.
• Engage in settlement discussions with insurance adjusters, plaintiff/defendant counsel, and internal stakeholders.
• Liaise with retail claims to process Bankruptcy Proofs of Claim and conduct investigative searches.
• Assist internal Labour/Employment Counsel with data research and preparation for grievances, arbitrations, and Labour Relations Board submissions.

Required profile

• Post‑secondary education in law, paralegal studies, or a related field.
• Demonstrated experience handling civil claims in Superior Court or Small Claims Court.
• Strong analytical abilities to assess claim validity and recommend appropriate actions.
• Excellent written communication for drafting pleadings, correspondence, and trial briefs.
• Ability to supervise and train law students and law clerks.

Required skills

• Knowledge of Small Claims Court procedures and Superior Court filing requirements.
• Proficiency in preparing court documents, affidavits, and pleadings.
• Legal research and investigative techniques.
• Experience negotiating settlements and managing pre‑trial processes.
