Fleet Technician – Municipal Vehicle Maintenance

About the role

The City of Hamilton is seeking a skilled Fleet Technician to diagnose, troubleshoot, and repair a wide range of municipal vehicles and equipment. This temporary, full‑time position supports the city's public works fleet for up to 24 months.

Key responsibilities

• Diagnose, troubleshoot and repair City vehicles and equipment using OEM diagnostic software.
• Perform scheduled inspections, preventive maintenance, and mandatory commercial vehicle inspections.
• Disassemble, repair and reassemble engines, transmissions, drivetrains, and related components.
• Operate shop tools such as hydraulic jacks, hoists, cranes, welding equipment, and computerized diagnostic devices.
• Complete computerized work orders, time cards and parts requisitions in the Fleet Management System.

Required profile

• Valid Ontario Truck and Coach Technician’s Licence (310T); 310S or 435A certifications are assets.
• Experience with Cummins, Detroit Diesel and Ford diesel exhaust after‑treatment systems.
• Ability to work with minimal supervision, outdoors in adverse weather, and on evening, night or weekend shifts.
• Physical capability to use heavy tools and equipment and to provide personal hand tools.

Required skills

• Proficiency with diagnostic software: Cummins Insite, Detroit Diesel Diagnostic Link, Allison DOC, Meritor WABCO Toolbox, Bendix ACOM, Ford IDS.
• Hands‑on experience with hydraulic jacks, hoists, cranes, oxy‑acetylene torches, welding equipment, drill presses, saws and other industrial shop tools.
• Knowledge of Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel) for documentation and reporting.
