Criminal Lawyer – Legal Aid & Private Practice

Job description
Key responsibilities
- Advise clients of their legal rights and all matters related to criminal law, ensuring they understand options and obligations.
- Perform administrative and management functions related to the practice of law, including case file organization and staff coordination.
- Plead clients' cases before courts, tribunals and boards, representing them effectively in hearings and proceedings.
- Draft legal documents and prepare statements of legal opinion, ensuring accuracy and compliance with statutory requirements.
- Offer mediation, conciliation and arbitration services to resolve disputes outside of court whenever appropriate.
- Supervise professional, para‑legal and support staff as well as articling students, providing guidance and performance oversight.
Required profile
- 3 to less than 5 years of experience in criminal law, preferably in legal‑aid clinics or private practice.
- Membership in the Canadian Bar Association and a provincial or territorial law society, with a clean criminal record check.
- Bondable and eligible for professional liability insurance, demonstrating reliability and trustworthiness.
- Accurate, organized, reliable and committed to high ethical standards and values.
Required skills
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office suite: Access, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, Windows, Word and Project.
- Experience using MAC operating systems and Sage Accounting Software for financial and case management tasks.
