About the role
The Power Cable Technician installs, maintains, troubleshoots and repairs high‑voltage distribution and transmission cable systems for Arctic Arrow. Working under the foreman at the Surrey Operational Centre, the role combines hands‑on splicing and termination work with a strong focus on safety and quality.
Key responsibilities
- Build, maintain and repair underground electrical power transmission and distribution systems.
- Splice overhead, underground or submarine multi‑conductor cables for power or telecommunications.
- Interpret notes, drawings and documentation to ensure correct material usage.
- Apply standards and regulations for safe work practices, high‑ and low‑voltage applications, stringing, line clearing and underground installations.
- Operate mobile cranes, reel tensioners, pullers, trenchers and various hand, power and electrical testing tools.
- Assess tool and equipment requirements based on job specifications.
- Work in confined spaces such as trenches and vaults, performing physically demanding tasks.
- Identify and assess hazards, including locating underground infrastructure.
- Maintain a clean, organized work environment and follow proper cable preparation and splicing techniques.
Required profile
- Journeyman certification or trade qualification from a recognized apprenticeship program or cable manufacturer (or ability to obtain).
- 1–10 years of experience working with voltages from 12 kV to 230 kV.
- Class 3 driver’s licence (preferred) with a clean abstract.
- Willingness to travel as needed and ability to pass a “Show Me” utility test.
- Ability to obtain certifications in Confined Space Entry, WHMIS and Asbestos awareness.
- Strong oral and written communication skills in English.
Required skills
- PILC cable splicing and termination.
- High‑voltage cable installation (12 kV‑230 kV).
- Operation of mobile cranes, reel tensioners, pullers and trenchers.
- Use of hand, power and electrical testing tools.
- Reading and interpreting construction drawings and documentation.
- Confined‑space work and hazard identification.
