Yard Operator I

About the role

The Yard Operator I supports daily yard operations, ensuring safe and efficient handling of scrap material. This position involves operating equipment, inspecting incoming scrap, and collaborating with scale operators, supervisors, and customers to meet quality and safety standards.

Key responsibilities

• Operate loaders, material handlers, cranes, and baler equipment to load and unload scrap.
• Inspect incoming scrap for quality, radiation, and environmental compliance; quarantine and report any issues.
• Verify scrap grades, apply deductions or downgrades, and communicate findings to the scale.
• Perform routine equipment care and document daily maintenance activities.
• Support rail operations where applicable, including shifting railcars, coupling/uncoupling, and operating locomotives.
• Assist with monthly inventory counts and equipment repairs as directed.
• Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area while delivering excellent customer service.

• Strong commitment to safety, environmental, and procedural compliance.
• Effective communication with team members, scale operators, and customers.
• Ability to work onsite in a physically demanding environment.

Required skills

• Operation of material handling equipment (cranes, loaders, balers).
• Radiation scanning of scrap material.
• Scrap inspection and grading.
• Railcar handling and locomotive operation (where applicable).
• Basic equipment maintenance and routine care.
