Vice President, Legal

About the role

Canfor is seeking a Vice President, Legal to join its Vancouver head office. The role sits on the senior leadership team and provides strategic legal counsel to the Board, executive team and subsidiaries. The VP balances enterprise‑level strategy with hands‑on deal execution and governance oversight.

Key responsibilities

• Provide strategic legal counsel to the Board of Directors, Executive Leadership Team and business units across Canfor and its subsidiaries.
• Develop and execute a legal strategy that protects and advances the organization’s business interests.
• Identify, assess and mitigate legal and regulatory risk across a complex, global organization.
• Advise on governance, compliance and public‑company obligations, including TSX and securities requirements.
• Lead major commercial transactions such as mergers and acquisitions, joint ventures and strategic growth initiatives.
• Oversee due diligence, negotiation, structuring and closing of complex deals.
• Manage large‑scale commercial contract negotiations to deliver pragmatic, business‑oriented solutions.
• Support corporate governance activities and act as Assistant Corporate Secretary, overseeing disclosure obligations and board materials.
• Lead, coach and develop the Legal team, fostering a high‑performing collaborative environment.
• Manage relationships with external counsel, auditors and advisors, ensuring compliance with applicable laws and evolving regulatory requirements.

Required profile

• Qualified lawyer with approximately 10+ years post‑call experience.
• Extensive experience in corporate/commercial law with a strong focus on transactions and deal work.
• Background in a publicly traded company or advising public companies.
• Proven ability to lead legal functions in a complex, global organization.
• Strong knowledge of governance, compliance and securities regulations.
