About the role
Huawei Canada’s Intellectual Property Rights Department is looking for an Intellectual Property Counsel to guide engineers through the invention disclosure and patent filing process for telecom technologies. The role involves protecting innovative solutions while supporting a culture of creativity and collaboration.
Key responsibilities
- Work with R&D engineers to review invention disclosures and identify patent‑worthy inventions in the telecom technical area.
- Analyze pending patent applications to assess value and shape a global filing strategy.
- Review and respond to office actions in multiple jurisdictions (US, EP, JP, KR) drafted by outside counsel.
- Prepare in‑house patent applications and office‑action responses for significant inventions.
- Manage patent portfolios, including claim‑chart preparation.
- Provide support for licensing, litigation, or related matters as needed.
- Participate in training, knowledge sharing, and skill‑development activities.
Required profile
- Registered USPTO or CIPO Patent Agent (or equivalent certification).
- 4+ years of experience preparing and prosecuting U.S., Canadian, or international patent applications, preferably in telecommunications, semiconductor, or computer fields.
- Strong technical background with a B.S. or higher in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or a related discipline.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.

What we offer
- Target annual compensation ranging from $48,000 to $94,000 CAD, based on education, experience, and demonstrated expertise.
