Senior Software Engineer (Backend Focused)

About the role

Highwood is seeking a senior backend‑focused software engineer to design and deliver high‑performance server‑side solutions for its emissions‑management platform. The role is hybrid in Calgary and reports to the Director of Software.

Key responsibilities

• Design, implement and maintain robust, scalable APIs using NestJS and TypeScript.
• Optimize PostgreSQL schemas and queries for high‑load scenarios.
• Drive system performance, observability and reliability as data volumes increase.
• Own features from conception through production, including testing and deployment on AWS.
• Conduct rigorous peer reviews and champion maintainable engineering standards.

Required profile

• Strong backend‑first mindset with deep TypeScript expertise.
• Experience building well‑architected APIs and services in NestJS.
• Solid understanding of relational database design and query optimization.
• Pragmatic approach to shipping value while managing technical debt.
• Comfort working in a fast‑paced, high‑intensity startup environment.
