Senior Manager, Payroll

About the role

The Senior Manager, Payroll provides strategic and operational leadership for payroll services across the University of British Columbia. This position ensures accurate, timely payroll processing for a diverse workforce, including unionized staff, while maintaining compliance with legislation, collective agreements, and university policies.

Key responsibilities

• Manage day‑to‑day payroll operations for a large, complex workforce, overseeing semi‑monthly processing and related financial transactions.
• Ensure full compliance with federal and provincial legislation, collective agreements, UBC policies, and audit requirements.
• Lead a team of payroll professionals, providing mentorship, coaching, and technical guidance.
• Serve as a payroll advisor on labour‑relations matters, supporting grievance resolution and bargaining processes.
• Maintain internal controls, manage risk, and safeguard payroll data confidentiality.
• Collaborate with HR, Finance, IT and the Integrated Resource Center on Workday configuration, payroll integration and automation initiatives.

Required profile

• Senior‑level experience leading payroll operations in a large, unionized environment.
• Demonstrated expertise in payroll compliance, internal controls and risk management.
• Strong ability to partner with HR, Finance, Labour Relations and IT to drive payroll transformation.

• Robotic Process Automation (RPA) for payroll process improvement.
