Senior CAD Designer - Plate Structures

About the role

CB&I, which delivers storage and asset-management solutions through its Storage Solutions and Asset Solutions business units, is hiring a Senior Plate Structures Designer in Calgary. The designer uses 2D and/or 3D CAD skills and CB&I engineering and drafting templates to produce and check drawings and bills of material for plate structures, foundations, structural and piping elements. The role works in a fast-paced, production-oriented environment, reports to the Project Engineer and may train or supervise less experienced designers.

Key responsibilities

• Produce and check detail drawings and bills of material for customer approval, fabrication and construction, in line with design codes, company standards and customer drawings.
• Ensure drawings are safe for field erection and consider constructability.
• Compare drawings and bills of material to the as-sold estimate and flag discrepancies to the project team.
• Run programs to produce and check drawings and bills of material.
• Mentor less experienced designers and make project-specific decisions.
• Commit to definitive deadlines, use the document management system and collaboration tools effectively, and suggest improvements to tools and workflows.

Required profile

• 7+ years of relevant experience.
• 2-year technical diploma in Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering or Construction Technology.
• Knowledge of steel detailing practices and standard industry conventions.
• Skills in geometry, trigonometry, unit conversions, quantity take-offs and basic bills of material.
• Advanced verbal and written communication skills.

Required skills

• Proficiency in 2D and/or 3D CAD, such as MicroStation and/or AutoCAD.
• Experience with Tekla is preferred.
