Safety Methodologies Intern (Summer 2027)

About the role

Waabi, a physical AI company behind commercial autonomous trucks and robotaxis, is seeking a Safety Methodologies Intern to support the development of the frameworks behind its driverless readiness decisions. The summer internship starts in May/June 2027 and runs full time (40 hours per week) until August/September 2027. You will help quantitatively validate the safety of the autonomous trucking solution using a highly realistic simulator and real-world data.

Key responsibilities

• Develop Python scripts and tools to calculate quantitative metrics and visualize complex data for collision assessment.
• Support optimization of data pipelines and automated assessment workflows used for safety validation.
• Explore large crash databases and apply multivariate modeling to predict collision-related metrics, and understand publicly available safety resources.
• Run A/B tests on collision models using metrics developed within the safety framework.
• Work with the safety team to integrate the models into safety evaluation pipelines.

Required profile

• Currently pursuing a Bachelor's, Master's or PhD in Computer Science, Robotics, Mathematics, Statistics or a related field.
• Experience handling missing values, anomalies and outliers in large, real-world datasets.
• Solid foundation in regression, classification and hypothesis testing, able to find patterns in large tabular data.
• Able to explain complex technical concepts clearly and work collaboratively across functions.
• Strong interest in self-driving technology.

Required skills

• Strong Python scripting, including data manipulation libraries such as Pandas and NumPy.
• Bonus: previous internship or academic experience in robotics, automotive or data science; SQL or other data mining tools; data visualization or dashboard creation.
