Research Assistant – Indigenous Chemical Risk Management

About the role
The Institute for Resources, Environment, and Sustainability (IRES) at UBC is seeking a full‑time Research Assistant to support a six‑year interdisciplinary project on transforming chemical risk management with Indigenous expertise. The role involves developing educational materials, analysing ethical guidelines, and fostering co‑learning between professionals and Indigenous Nations.
Key responsibilities
- Assist in reviewing current ethical guidelines and policies (e.g., TCPS2, OCAP, community protocols) related to Indigenous engagement.
- Support the preparation of educational resources that integrate colonial history and decolonisation perspectives.
- Conduct critical analyses of existing research practices with Indigenous peoples.
- Collaborate with a diverse team of scholars and Indigenous leaders across North America and Aotearoa.
- Participate in conference travel and community‑engagement activities as required.
Required profile
- Background in environmental science, toxicology, chemistry, Indigenous studies, public policy, qualitative research, or related fields.
- Strong interest in ethical research practices and Indigenous knowledge systems.
- Ability to work collaboratively in an interdisciplinary, inter‑institutional environment.
