Part‑Time Cage Processing Technician (Regular)

About the role

This regular part‑time position supports the health and cleanliness of research animals and their housing facilities across UBC's Animal Care Services. The role involves daily cleaning, equipment maintenance, and routine laboratory tasks within barrier and multi‑barrier animal facilities.

Key responsibilities

• Clean and prepare cages, accessories, bottles, carts and racks; use disinfectants and manage hazardous and non‑hazardous waste.
• Operate and perform minor maintenance on equipment such as rack washers, autoclaves, sonicators, high‑pressure spray units, floor scrubbers and chemical dispensing stations.
• Monitor chlorine levels, inventory consumables, and coordinate laundry processing as needed.
• Maintain common areas (lunchrooms, washrooms, lockers, offices) and ensure all safety SOPs and CCAC guidelines are followed.
• Document equipment issues, generate reports, and assist with workflow planning when supervisors are unavailable.

Required profile

• High school graduation with at least one year of related experience (or equivalent combination of education and experience).
• Commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion, and ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
• Physical ability to lift up to 25 kg repeatedly and perform continuous walking, bending, stooping, reaching, twisting and turning in humid environments.
• Willingness to maintain and upgrade training, and to train others as needed.

Required skills

• Operation of rack and tunnel washers, bedding vacuum systems, bottle filling systems, high‑pressure spray units, autoclaves/bulk sterilizers, sonicators, water‑bag compactors, vertical form‑fill‑seal machines, dry‑heat ovens, floor scrubbers and chemical dispensing stations.
• Use of disinfectants, monitoring of chlorine treatment levels, and proper disposal of hazardous waste.
• Basic equipment troubleshooting, minor repairs and preventive maintenance.
• Inventory management and documentation of equipment performance.
