Mental Health Intake Clinician

About the role

The Mental Health Intake Clinician is the first point of contact for UBC students seeking help with mental health concerns. The clinician conducts brief, structured assessments, determines risk and acuity, and connects students to appropriate university or community services.

Key responsibilities

• Conduct initial mental health appointments, triage students using a stepped‑care approach, and assess risk, symptom severity, and functional impact.
• Perform structured risk assessments for suicidality, self‑injury, and safety threats using validated tools.
• Apply trauma‑informed, culturally responsive practices, especially for Indigenous, LGBTQ2SIA+, international, and other marginalized groups.
• Determine the most suitable service pathway, facilitate warm handoffs, and ensure continuity of care.
• Document assessments, safety plans, and referrals in the electronic health record in compliance with professional standards.
• Participate in interdisciplinary meetings, case conferences, and crisis response protocols.

Required profile

• Reports to the Director, Student Health & Wellbeing and works under professional supervision.
• Collaborates with family physicians, nurse practitioners, psychiatrists, counsellors, psychologists and other SHW staff within an integrated, interdisciplinary model.
