Mechatronics Engineering Intern

About the role

Ayrton Energy is seeking a Mechatronics Engineering Intern to help develop cutting‑edge hydrogen storage technology. You will work alongside engineers and scientists on reactor design, measurement systems, and laboratory automation, gaining hands‑on experience in a fast‑growing clean‑tech startup.

Key responsibilities

• Assist in mechanical design, simulation, prototyping, manufacturing and commissioning of reactors and test equipment.
• Develop microcontroller‑based measurement and automation tools, including data acquisition and processing software.
• Specify, source, and evaluate electrical and instrumentation components.
• Generate design documentation such as schematics, wiring diagrams, and control notes.
• Support hazard reviews, risk assessments and safe operating procedures.

Required profile

• Currently pursuing or recently completed a Bachelor’s in Mechatronics, Control, Electrical, Mechanical Engineering or related field.
• Available for a 12‑ or 16‑month co‑op/internship term.
• Hands‑on experience building and testing mechatronic systems through coursework, projects or prior work.
• Legally authorized to work in Canada and able to work on‑site in Calgary.

Required skills

• SolidWorks CAD for design and manufacturing drawings.
• Microcontroller platforms (Arduino, M5Stack) and programming for measurement, automation or data acquisition.
• Familiarity with Beckhoff PLCs, TwinCAT and EtherCAT networks (preferred).
• Experience with fuel‑cell, electrolyzer or related electro‑chemical systems (preferred).
• Knowledge of hydrogen and hazardous‑area classification standards (preferred).
