About the role

The Manager, Payroll Operations & Control at the University of British Columbia leads the payroll and benefits team to ensure accurate, secure and compliant payroll processing for a $1.6 billion payroll budget. This senior position drives the implementation of best‑practice procedures, enhances segregation of duties and reduces off‑cycle payroll runs while providing expert guidance on regulatory and contractual obligations.

Key responsibilities

• Lead the payroll and benefits team, set priorities, coach staff and ensure segregation of duties across team leads.
• Develop and maintain payroll policies, controls and compliance with federal and provincial legislation.
• Oversee financial reconciliations, payroll reporting and audit interactions.
• Identify process‑improvement opportunities, design new payroll processes and manage system upgrades or implementations.
• Provide expert advice to internal stakeholders on payroll legislation, collective‑bargaining agreements and risk mitigation.

Required profile

• Extensive experience in payroll operations, including knowledge of statutory, contractual and fiscal payroll obligations.
• Proven leadership skills with responsibility for supervising team leads and managing large‑scale payroll projects.
• Strong analytical ability to develop reports, investigate discrepancies and implement risk controls.
• Excellent communication skills to liaise with senior faculty, finance, HR, tax, risk management and external auditors.
