Legal Advisor – Municipal & Indigenous Law (Kuujjuaq)

About the role

We are seeking a qualified Legal Advisor to provide comprehensive legal support to the 14 Northern villages in Nunavik. The role involves drafting documents, advising on municipal elections, and managing litigation and insurance matters.

Key responsibilities

• Provide legal technical assistance to the 14 Northern villages.
• Draft calls for tenders, contracts, by‑laws, resolutions and other legal documents.
• Evaluate received tenders for compliance and participate in tender preparation.
• Prepare legal opinions on various topics as requested by the villages.
• Assist during municipal elections and facilitate capacity‑building activities.
• Monitor and follow up on litigation files involving the villages.
• Handle insurance claims and support annual policy renewals.
• Manage the Offence Management Bureau, process statements of offences and act as attorney in court.
• Maintain positive relationships with village representatives and perform other related duties.

Required profile

• Member of the Barreau du Québec.
• Minimum two years of law practice, preferably in the municipal sector.
• Strong leadership, organizational, problem‑solving and decision‑making abilities.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills in English and French; knowledge of Inuktitut is an asset.
• Ability to work under pressure, meet deadlines and travel within Nunavik and beyond.
• Experience in cross‑cultural environments, especially with Indigenous communities, is a plus.

Required skills

• Proficiency with the Microsoft Office Suite.
