General Counsel, Corporate Secretary & Chief Privacy Officer

About the role

The General Counsel, Corporate Secretary & Chief Privacy Officer reports to the President and CEO and serves as a trusted advisor to the Board of Directors. This enterprise‑wide leadership role is responsible for establishing and overseeing a comprehensive legal, governance, and privacy framework that protects the organization’s interests and ensures compliance across a complex public‑sector environment.

Key responsibilities

• Provide strategic legal counsel to the CEO, Board, and senior leadership on complex regulatory, governance, and risk matters.
• Lead the legal strategy for commercial transactions, intellectual property, research commercialization, privacy, and public‑sector accountability.
• Oversee corporate governance, board administration, and secretarial duties.
• Ensure compliance with applicable laws, regulations, and privacy standards.
• Manage risk and advise on emerging technologies, data governance, and public‑private collaborations.
• Lead and develop a high‑performing legal team.

Required profile

• Law degree and membership in good standing with a Canadian law society.
• 15+ years of progressive experience in private practice and senior in‑house roles within complex, multi‑stakeholder organizations.
• Proven ability to lead legal teams and influence at the executive and board level.
• Strong judgment, business acumen, and communication skills.
