Director of Environmental Services

About the role

The Regional Municipality of Durham is seeking a visionary leader to serve as Director of Environmental Services. Reporting to senior management, the Director will guide a workforce of 300 professionals across water, wastewater, engineering, and technology divisions, ensuring safe, compliant, and sustainable services for a rapidly growing region.

Key responsibilities

• Provide executive direction for a $16 billion asset portfolio, aligning operations with corporate priorities and Council vision.
• Oversee six integrated divisions, including water and wastewater planning, plant operations, resource monitoring, infrastructure analytics, engineering support, and SCADA systems.
• Manage complex operating and capital budgets, and lead evidence‑based asset management and lifecycle planning through 2051.
• Drive advancement of SCADA and operational technology, partnering with Corporate IT to strengthen cybersecurity across critical infrastructure.
• Build and mentor a high‑performing leadership team, foster a culture of accountability, and plan workforce succession.

Required profile

• Engineering degree (Civil, Environmental or related) with P.Eng. accreditation.
• Minimum 20 years of progressive experience delivering vertical and linear water and wastewater services or comparable infrastructure environments.
• Proven ability to lead large, multidisciplinary teams and manage large‑scale capital delivery.
• Strategic, results‑oriented mindset with strong stakeholder‑management and change‑leadership skills.
• MBA considered an asset.
