Director Finance, Athletics and Recreation

About the role

The Director of Finance, Athletics and Recreation provides strategic financial stewardship for UBC's Athletics and Recreation department. Reporting to senior leadership, the role consolidates and monitors budgets across all operational units, ensuring sound financial performance and alignment with the Vice President Students portfolio.

Key responsibilities

• Consolidate and monitor the budgets of all Athletics and Recreation operational units.
• Conduct ongoing budget analysis and monthly financial monitoring to identify funding pressures and emerging priorities.
• Provide evidence‑based financial recommendations to the A&R Leadership Team for resource allocation decisions.
• Present the department’s overall financial position and evaluate financial implications of proposed actions.
• Collaborate with the Finance Director of the VP Students portfolio to ensure alignment of financial strategies.
• Oversee financial management of an annual operating budget exceeding $36 million and facilities valued at over $450 million.
• Manage financial oversight for 26 varsity team budgets and multiple ancillary business operations.

Required profile

• Extensive experience in financial management within a large, complex organization.
• Proven ability to analyze budgets, forecast financial performance, and advise senior leaders.
• Strong understanding of revenue streams such as ancillary business activities, student fees, donations, and central funding.
• Excellent communication skills to convey financial information to diverse stakeholders.
• Demonstrated leadership in guiding finance teams and influencing strategic decisions.
