Criminal Lawyer (North York, ON)

About the role

Toronto Advocates is seeking a dedicated Criminal Lawyer to join its North York office. The successful candidate will provide expert legal counsel to clients facing criminal matters, working in a fast‑paced environment that may involve both legal‑aid clinic and private‑practice settings.

Key responsibilities

• Advise clients on their legal rights and all matters related to criminal law.
• Perform administrative and management functions associated with legal practice.
• Plead cases before courts, tribunals and boards.
• Draft legal documents, statements of opinion, and prepare mediation, conciliation and arbitration services.
• Supervise professional, para‑legal, support staff and articling students.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience.
• 3–5 years of experience in criminal law.
• Membership in the Canadian Bar Association and a provincial law society.
• Pega certification is an asset.
• Bondable, able to pass a criminal record check and obtain professional liability insurance.
• Ability to work under pressure, manage large caseloads and meet tight deadlines.
• Strong ethics, reliability and excellent oral and written communication.
