Counsellor – Varsity Athletics Mental Health & Performance

About the role

The Counsellor will deliver mental health and mental performance services to the UBC Department of Athletics and Recreation, supporting varsity student‑athletes’ wellbeing and performance needs through counselling, triage, referrals and applied performance consultation.

Key responsibilities

• Provide single‑session and short‑term counselling, conduct triage and refer athletes to stepped‑care resources, including Student Health, sport medicine, dietetics and external crisis services.
• Design and deliver mental‑performance workshops, seminars and team‑based interventions aligned with training, competition and academic cycles.
• Consult with coaches, athletics staff and faculty on student‑athlete mental health, wellbeing and performance issues, including crisis support.
• Develop and maintain a network of internal and external resources specific to varsity athletics.
• Participate in departmental and university meetings, contribute to committees, and produce reports or publications as required.

Required profile

• Master’s degree in Counselling Psychology or related field; eligible for professional certification in British Columbia.
• Minimum five years of clinical counselling experience, including supervision of practicum students.
