Canadian (Out-of-Province) Student Aid Officer

About the role

The Canadian (Out‑of‑Province) Student Aid Officer supports McGill’s Scholarship and Student Aid Office by advising students on a wide range of financial assistance options, including government aid, institutional scholarships, bursaries and work‑study programs. Reporting to the Associate Director, the role combines direct student counseling with the administration of need‑based awards.

Key responsibilities

• Onboard and train new staff members, providing mentorship and shadowing for Student Aid Associates.
• Counsel students on budgeting, debt management, loan repayment terms and the impact of non‑repayment.
• Explain institutional aid programs such as Entrance Bursaries, In‑Course Financial Aid, Work‑Study, Accessibility Aid and tuition fee deferrals.
• Interview undergraduate and graduate students to assess financial need and determine appropriate award types.
• Conduct online assessments for need‑based applications and perform final review and approval of awards.
• Review applications for the Work‑Study program and make recommendations on exceptional cases and appeals.
• Assist students with the preparation of applications and supporting documentation.

Required profile

• Experience interviewing students to evaluate financial need.
• Ability to interpret and apply government and institutional financial aid policies.
• Strong communication skills for advising diverse student populations.
