Finance Officer

About the role

The Finance Officer reports to the Associate Director Administration and leads the financial management of McGill Student Services, overseeing an operating budget of roughly $25 million across seven specialties. The role ensures sound financial planning, controls, reporting and compliance while supporting senior leadership and service directors.

Key responsibilities

• Oversee budget preparation and consolidation for seven services (approximately $19 million) and present the final Student Services budget for executive approval.
• Develop short‑ and long‑term financial forecasts, including 3‑year projections for soft‑funded units and strategic reporting for ministry grants and donations.
• Design, implement and monitor financial policies, controls and procedures to ensure compliance with university regulations and audit recommendations.
• Act as primary liaison for internal and external auditors, responding to audit requests and facilitating the audit process.
• Supervise Accounting Coordinators and a Financial Administrator, providing training and performance oversight.
• Manage the Student Wellness Hub physician billing function across 13 jurisdictions, ensuring regulatory compliance, claim reconciliation and vendor contract administration.
• Participate in university finance committees and represent the unit in internal and external meetings.

Required profile

• Extensive knowledge of accounting and financial management principles.
• Experience managing multi‑million‑dollar budgets within a complex organization.
• Proven ability to develop and enforce financial policies, controls and audit procedures.
• Experience supervising accounting staff and providing training.
• Familiarity with university financial procedures, regulations and reporting requirements.
