Barrister & Solicitor – Personal Injury (Civil Crown Counsel)

About the role

The Legal Services Division of Alberta Justice is seeking a Barrister & Solicitor to join the Family and Surrogate Court Litigation team in Edmonton. This permanent, full‑time position focuses on personal injury and fatal accident matters for the Office of the Public Guardian and Trustee, primarily under the Minors’ Property Act and the Fatal Accidents Act.

Key responsibilities

• Manage a high‑volume caseload of personal injury and fatal accident files involving minor plaintiffs.
• Provide legal advice on the Minors’ Property Act and the Fatal Accidents Act.
• Appear in all levels of court, especially the Court of King’s Bench, handling applications in Civil Chambers.
• Draft clear, concise legal opinions and review provisional settlements, including assessment of legal fees and net proceeds.
• Support the Court, plaintiff and defence counsel, and adjustors in concluding settlements for minors.
• Offer expertise to the Court and litigants on matters related to the Minors’ Property Act.
• Assist unrepresented minor plaintiffs throughout the litigation process.

Required profile

• Member in good standing of the Alberta Law Society (Barrister and Solicitor).
• Significant experience (4+ years) in personal injury, fatal accident, or civil litigation matters.
• Demonstrated ability to manage complex caseloads and conduct court appearances.
• Strong analytical and written communication skills for drafting legal opinions and settlement assessments.
