Assistant County Counsel – Up to 18 month contract

About the role

The County of Brant is seeking an Assistant County Counsel to join its Legal Services Department on an up‑to‑18‑month contract. Working from the Burford Administration Office with remote flexibility, you will support the County Solicitor & Corporate Counsel in delivering high‑quality legal services to the municipality.

Key responsibilities

• Provide legal advice and representation for the County on municipal matters, including litigation before the Ontario Land Tribunal, Superior Court of Justice, and Provincial Offences Court.
• Draft, review, and negotiate contracts, real‑estate documents, and other legal instruments.
• Interpret and apply statutes such as the Municipal Act, Planning Act, and related legislation.
• Prepare legal memoranda, reports, and recommendations for Council, staff, and external agencies.
• Manage confidential information and ensure compliance with privacy and freedom‑of‑information requirements.
• Collaborate with elected officials, boards, unions, and community groups to resolve legal issues.

Required profile

• LL.B or J.D. degree from an accredited university.
• Member in good standing of the Law Society of Ontario and licensed to practice in Ontario.
• Minimum five (5) years of experience in municipal or government law, preferably with litigation experience.
• Demonstrated knowledge of municipal statutes and tribunal procedures.
• Strong written and oral communication skills, with the ability to provide clear legal advice.
• Valid Class G driver’s licence and access to a vehicle for municipal business.
