Transportation Project Engineer – California

About the role

Wood Rodgers is seeking a Project Engineer to join its Northern California Transportation Division. You will work on a variety of transportation infrastructure projects, analyzing impacts on traffic and supporting delivery from concept through construction. The position is staffed, hourly and non‑exempt, offering a collaborative environment focused on regional mobility.

Key responsibilities

• Lead design and analysis of roads, highways, and multimodal facilities, including feasibility studies and cost estimates.
• Assist the Project Manager with proposals, client coordination, and delegation of tasks to junior staff.
• Ensure compliance with current transportation codes, regulations, and standards; obtain necessary permits and approvals.
• Prepare clear technical reports and memoranda summarizing results for clients and agency staff.
• Mentor, train, and oversee the technical work of junior engineers.
• Maintain project budgets, schedules, and day‑to‑day task tracking to meet deadlines.
• Support scope, schedule, and budget development for new project pursuits.
• Represent Wood Rodgers at industry events to grow the brand.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree in engineering from an accredited institution.
• Minimum 5 years of relevant transportation engineering experience.
• California Professional Engineer (PE) license; additional certifications are a plus.

Required skills

• Proficiency in AutoCAD Civil 3D or MicroStation.
• Experience developing Plans, Specifications, and Estimate (PS&E) packages for highway and roadway projects.
• Ability to prepare technical reports and documentation.
• Knowledge of local and federal agency design standards.
• Strong command of Microsoft Office applications.
