Lead Hand Painter

About the role

The Calgary John Howard Society is seeking a hands‑on Lead Hand Painter to support renovation and maintenance projects within its growing construction social enterprise. Reporting to the Crew Supervisor, the Lead Hand will assist with day‑to‑day job execution, crew supervision, training and site coordination.

Key responsibilities

• Support day‑to‑day renovation and repair work, including painting, drywall, and general maintenance.
• Assist the Crew Supervisor with job planning, task coordination, and on‑site leadership.
• Provide hands‑on training, guidance, and mentorship to crew members.
• Step in to oversee job sites when the Crew Supervisor is unavailable.
• Manage inventory by tracking supplies, identifying shortages, and ordering materials as needed.
• Ensure job sites are safe, organized, and compliant with Occupational Health & Safety standards and PPE requirements.
• Monitor quality of work and address issues promptly.
• Communicate job progress, challenges, and crew needs to the Crew Supervisor.
• Contribute to the development of systems, processes, and best practices as the social enterprise grows.

Required profile

• 2–5 years of hands‑on experience in painting, renovation, construction, or building maintenance.
• Experience as a senior crew member, lead hand, or similar leadership role.
• Strong problem‑solving skills and attention to detail.
• Comfortable supporting and guiding others on the job site.
• Reliable, adaptable team player who can step into leadership when needed.
• Motivated by meaningful work and community impact.
