Training Officer – Fire Service

About the role

Central York Fire Services is seeking a Training Officer to develop, deliver and evaluate fire service training programs for its staff across Aurora and Newmarket. The role supports professional development and ensures frontline personnel meet required competencies.

Key responsibilities

• Develop, prepare, deliver, evaluate and monitor training programs for fire service staff.
• Coordinate Fire College courses and identify appropriate off‑site training opportunities.
• Create and manage in‑service training programs and lesson plans.
• Work with shift instructors to deliver training material to frontline personnel.
• Manage specialized training equipment, conduct equipment research and procurement.
• Participate in recruit selection and promotional examinations as required.

Required profile

• Certified Training Officer Accreditation by the Ontario Fire Marshal’s Office or NFPA 1041 Fire Service Instructor Level I (with ability to achieve Level II within one year) or equivalent experience.
• Commitment to ongoing skill development and ability to perform suppression firefighter duties.
• Experience delivering training in lectures, interactive sessions and demonstrations.
• Knowledge of teaching techniques, lesson‑plan creation and use of teaching aids.
• Strong leadership, judgment and interpersonal skills.
• Proficiency with computers, MS Office and fire department management software (e.g., Firehouse).

Required skills

• NFPA 1041 Fire Service Instructor certification.
• Ontario Fire Marshal Training Officer accreditation.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite.
• Experience with Firehouse fire department management software.
• Equipment management and procurement.
