Facility Manager – Advanced Laboratory (Ottawa)

About the role

Q‑Block Computing is constructing a 30,000 sq ft advanced laboratory in Ottawa and needs a hands‑on Facility Manager to lead the build‑out and then own the long‑term operation of the building. This permanent, on‑site role blends direct construction work with subcontractor coordination and requires practical judgment to decide what to self‑perform versus outsource.

Key responsibilities

• Perform hands‑on construction and maintenance tasks such as framing, drywall, painting, fixture mounting, cable routing, electrical rough‑in, basic plumbing, and HVAC work.
• Hire, direct, and supervise independent contractors for large‑scale scopes like major drywall campaigns, service‑entrance upgrades, HVAC installation, and fire‑protection work.
• Scope jobs, solicit quotes, evaluate contractors, and manage subcontractor performance on site.
• Plan and procure materials, tools, consumables, and services while controlling costs against approved budgets.
• Support installation and reconfiguration of laboratory infrastructure, including optical tables, cable trays, utility drops, and equipment pads.
• Coordinate permits, inspections, and code compliance; maintain organized records of building systems and as‑built drawings.

Required profile

• Journeyperson or Red Seal certification (or equivalent) in electrical, carpentry, or a related trade.
• 5+ years of practical experience in commercial construction, building maintenance, or multi‑trade environments.
• Proven ability to perform hands‑on work and direct subcontractors on active job sites.
• Strong organizational skills and the capacity to manage multiple construction and maintenance activities simultaneously.
