Mechanical Engineer in Training (EIT)

About the role

We are seeking a Mechanical Engineer in Training (EIT) to join HIDI’s Ottawa office. You will support the design and delivery of mechanical building systems, gaining hands‑on experience from concept through construction on a variety of projects.

Key responsibilities

• Assist in designing HVAC, plumbing, drainage and fire‑protection systems and develop drawings using AutoCAD and Revit.
• Perform calculations such as heat‑gain/loss and energy modelling, prepare schematics, equipment schedules and engineering reports.
• Coordinate designs with architectural, electrical and structural teams and ensure compliance with OBC, NFPA, ASHRAE and other codes.
• Attend client and internal meetings, participate in site reviews, review shop drawings and respond to RFIs, CCNs and SIs.
• Collaborate with team members, manage time across multiple projects and pursue professional development toward P.Eng. designation.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering.
• Registered or working toward registration as an EIT.
• Strong organizational, time‑management and communication skills.
• Proactive problem‑solver with analytical abilities.
• Bilingual English/French considered an asset.

Required skills

• AutoCAD (Revit experience is an asset).
• Design of HVAC, plumbing, drainage and fire‑protection systems.
• Heat‑gain/loss calculations and energy modelling.
• Knowledge of building codes and standards (OBC, NFPA, ASHRAE).
