Zone Medical Officer of Health

About the role

The Zone Medical Officer of Health (MOH) serves as a clinical expert in public health and preventive medicine for a designated geographic zone in Alberta. Reporting to the Zone Lead, the MOH provides specialist medical advice to physicians, health providers and government stakeholders, and leads efforts to control communicable diseases, environmental hazards, and public‑health emergencies while advancing health equity.

Key responsibilities

• Act as a specialist consultant on population health issues and disease prevention.
• Lead surveillance, outbreak detection, control, and response activities.
• Develop and maintain relationships with internal and external health stakeholders.
• Support on‑call coverage and contribute to public‑health policy and safety guidelines.
• Educate, precept, and mentor health professionals to improve public‑health knowledge.
• Manage the MOH team for the Southeast/Southwest zone, when applicable.

Required profile

• Medical Doctor (MD) licensed with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta.
• Fellowship with the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada in Public Health and Preventive Medicine, or equivalent clinical training plus additional public‑health qualifications (e.g., MPH).
• Demonstrated project‑management, change‑management and stakeholder‑engagement experience.
