Utility Worker – Custodial Services

About the role

The Utility Worker supports UBC Building Operations by performing minor maintenance and repair tasks across core university buildings and equipment on the Vancouver campus. Reporting to the Operations Manager, Custodial Services, the role combines independent work with team collaboration to keep the learning environment safe, efficient, and sustainable.

Key responsibilities

• Troubleshoot and repair equipment such as floor polishers, ride‑on cleaning machines, vacuums, and appliance cords.
• Replace lamps and bulbs, including specialized lighting and underwater pool fixtures, working at heights up to 50 ft using genies or man‑lifts.
• Repair non‑wiring electrical components like cover plates and lens covers.
• Perform minor plumbing tasks: replace washers and cartridges in waterless urinals, clear clogged toilets or drains, and maintain biodegradable sewage systems.
• Adjust and repair building systems and parts, including flooring, windows, blinds, ceiling tiles, skylights, and apply sealants, caulking, or waterproofing compounds.
• Carry out minor plaster and wallboard repairs, lubricate locks, closers, hinges, and replace dispensing equipment.
• Dust and clean ceiling areas, high beams, and remove animal feces from facilities.

Required profile

• Ability to follow daily instructions from the Head Utility Worker and work both independently and as part of a team.
• Comfort working at heights up to 50 ft and operating aerial lift equipment safely.
• Physical capability to perform manual tasks in various weather conditions on a university campus.
