About the role

The Student Archives Assistant will support the Rare Books and Special Collections unit by arranging and describing the St. Andrews Society archives. This part‑time, fixed‑term role runs from September 2026 to June 2027, offering up to 15 hours per week at an hourly rate of $25.

Key responsibilities

  • Arrange and describe archival materials in accordance with professional standards.
  • Prepare collection description information, including administrative history and scope notes, for entry into the Access to Memory (AtoM) system.
  • Rehouse and reformat items as needed, following best practices.
  • Contribute metadata to both AtoM and the Sofia discovery tool.
  • Write monthly progress reports for the supervising archivist.

Required profile

  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • Knowledge of historic archival arrangement and description.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to work independently.
  • Physical ability to lift up to 20 kg, handle dusty materials, bend, walk, and climb ladders.
  • Fluency in oral and written English (level 4).

Required skills

  • Sofia discovery tool.
