Specialist GenAI Architect

About the role

Amgen is looking for a Specialist GenAI Architect to join its Applied AI practice, which covers AI productivity and custom GPT solutions. The role defines and guides secure, scalable, reusable and production-ready GenAI solutions so that Amgen organizations can adopt LLM-powered assistants, agents, Custom GPTs and AI-enabled applications. It turns business needs into end-to-end technical designs, sets up reference architectures and guardrails, validates concepts with prototypes and guides engineering teams from discovery through production deployment.

Key responsibilities

• Lead end-to-end architecture for LLM-powered assistants, agents, Custom GPTs, RAG solutions and AI applications across experience, model, retrieval, orchestration, integration, security, cloud, deployment and observability layers.
• Translate use cases into architecture documents, diagrams, integration patterns, data flows, security models and deployment designs, and choose patterns such as prompt engineering, RAG, agent orchestration and workflow automation.
• Build proofs of concept and reference implementations, then guide delivery teams so solutions stay aligned with approved architecture and security controls.
• Run architecture reviews, identify technical risks and security gaps, and set up reusable reference architectures, technical standards and guardrails.
• Define safeguards for prompt injection, data leakage, secrets exposure and other risks, and establish identity and access patterns using OAuth, service identities, RBAC and secrets management.
• Evaluate emerging AI platforms, partner with product, engineering, data, DevOps and cybersecurity teams, and mentor engineers and solution designers.

Required profile

• Master's degree with 6+ years of relevant experience, or Bachelor's degree with 8+ years, in computer science, IT, engineering, data science or a related field.
• 6+ years of progressive experience in software engineering, system design, cloud architecture or solution architecture, including at least 2 years leading end-to-end technical design.
• 2+ years of hands-on experience architecting production GenAI applications, assistants, agents, Custom GPTs or RAG solutions on ChatGPT Enterprise or comparable platforms.
• Demonstrated experience architecting secure, scalable solutions on AWS with managed AI services and cloud-native compute patterns.
• Ability to communicate complex technical recommendations clearly to engineers, product owners, platform teams and senior leaders.

Required skills

• Strong knowledge of GenAI architecture: model selection, prompt and context design, RAG, embeddings, vector and hybrid retrieval, agent orchestration, guardrails and observability.
• Hands-on Python and experience building prototypes, APIs and evaluation utilities.
• Experience with AWS (Lambda, ECS/Fargate, EC2), IAM, VPC, API Gateway, OAuth, RBAC and secrets management.
• Preferred: experience with ChatGPT Enterprise.
