About the role

The Second Cook supports the Sous Chef in daily kitchen operations at UBC Okanagan Campus. Working on an assigned line or station, the role blends food preparation with leadership responsibilities, ensuring high‑quality service for students and staff.

Key responsibilities

  • Participate in day‑to‑day production of meals.
  • Operate the assigned line or station and perform food preparation tasks.
  • Assume a leadership role at the specific station, guiding workflow.
  • Provide training and mentorship to Second and Third Cooks as needed.
  • Maintain food safety standards and assist with inventory control.
  • Perform other duties as required by the Sous Chef.

Required profile

  • Grade 12 or equivalent.
  • Certificate in cooking from a recognized institution.
  • Food Safe Level 1 Certificate.
  • At least two years of experience in a food‑services environment with diverse cuisines.
  • Ability to lift 30 + lbs safely and stand for 8 + hours.
  • Flexibility to work evenings and weekends.
  • Strong customer‑service orientation and teamwork skills.
