Research Assistant / Technician 2 – Animal Care

About the role

The Vancouver Coastal Health Research Institute (VCHRI) Preclinical Modelling Core at UBC seeks three Research Assistants/Technicians 2 to support animal‑based research. You will work in a regulated laboratory environment, providing daily care and technical support for a variety of laboratory animal species.

Key responsibilities

• Perform daily husbandry tasks: feeding, watering, cage changing, and sanitising animal rooms and equipment.
• Conduct health checks, monitor animal welfare, and document observations in compliance with CCAC, VCHRI and UBC SOPs.
• Maintain breeding colonies and manage colony health, including isolation of ill animals and reporting to the veterinarian.
• Assist in surgical suite preparation, instrumentation setup, anaesthesia administration, and imaging of laboratory animals.
• Provide pre‑ and post‑operative care, collect experimental data, and ensure accurate record‑keeping.
• Follow all safety policies and procedures under UBC Safety and Risk Services.

Required profile

• Works collaboratively with other technicians and reports to the on‑site Operations Manager.
• Interacts with faculty, research assistants, and students in a research setting.
• Adheres to strict regulatory and safety standards.

Required skills

• Animal handling and husbandry for multiple species.
• Knowledge of CCAC regulations and laboratory SOPs.
• Experience with surgical suite preparation and anaesthesia administration.
• Imaging techniques for laboratory animals.
• Accurate data collection and documentation.
