Registered Veterinary Technician – Animal Care Services

About the role

The University of British Columbia is seeking a Registered Veterinary Technician to support its animal‑based research programmes. You will work closely with clinical veterinarians and the Animal Care Team to provide high‑level surgical and technical assistance across multiple research facilities.

Key responsibilities

• Deliver surgical support and technical services for a variety of research projects.
• Operate large‑animal anesthesia machines, diagnostic laboratory equipment, and digital environmental monitoring tools.
• Handle animals exposed to hazardous, bio‑hazardous, and radioactive agents while following strict safety protocols.
• Travel between UBC research sites such as the Centre for Comparative Medicine, Centre for Disease Modeling, and Modified Barrier Facility.
• Collaborate with project managers, senior operations staff, and researchers to ensure smooth project execution.

Required profile

• Registered Veterinary Technologist (RVT) employed by Animal Care Services.
• Thorough knowledge of hazardous and bio‑hazardous material handling, including PPE use and annual TB testing.
• Ability to work in a multi‑species, technically complex environment.
• Willingness to follow strict safety and regulatory procedures.

Required skills

• Proficiency with large‑animal anesthesia machines.
• Experience using diagnostic laboratory equipment.
• Familiarity with digital environmental monitoring tools.
• Competence in handling hazardous, bio‑hazardous, and radioactive substances.
• Surgical support techniques for various animal species.
