About the role

This three‑month internship supports the Programme Management Officer at the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity in Montreal. The intern will contribute to research, analysis and drafting activities that promote synergies across the three Rio Conventions.

Key responsibilities

  • Research and analyse national policy instruments (e.g., NBSAPs, NDCs, LDN targets, national adaptation plans).
  • Review recent COP decisions of the Rio Conventions to identify mandates and emerging cooperation areas.
  • Prepare analytical summaries, briefing notes and comparative matrices mapping convergence, complementarity and gaps.
  • Support Joint Liaison Group activities, including background research and preparation of meeting materials.
  • Assist in drafting inputs for reports, technical papers and presentations on convention synergies.
  • Help organise workshops, side events and consultations related to the thematic focus.
  • Undertake other tasks as assigned by the supervisor.

Required profile

  • Current enrolment in a graduate or final‑year undergraduate program in environmental policy, international relations, law, or a related field.
  • Strong interest in biodiversity, climate change and sustainable development.
  • Ability to work independently and meet tight deadlines.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.

Required skills

  • Research and analytical abilities.
  • Drafting and report‑writing proficiency.
  • Familiarity with policy documents such as NBSAPs, NDCs and COP decisions.
  • Organisational skills for supporting events and workshops.
