About the role
The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) seeks a consultant to lead a technical study on access and benefit‑sharing (ABS) related to genetic resources, traditional knowledge and digital sequence information. The assignment will examine experiences of indigenous peoples and local communities, produce a draft action plan, and support the implementation of the Convention on Biological Diversity.
Key responsibilities
- Conduct a comprehensive desk review of literature, national ABS measures and existing case studies.
- Analyse documented experiences and inputs from indigenous peoples and local communities.
- Facilitate a peer‑review process involving Parties, indigenous groups and other stakeholders.
- Prepare a draft technical study and action plan, incorporate feedback, and deliver the final report.
- Coordinate with the Head of the Engagement and Cooperation Unit and the Programme Management Officer.
Required profile
- Advanced degree in environmental law, biodiversity, natural resources management or a related field.
- Proven experience working on ABS frameworks, indigenous peoples’ rights, or biodiversity conventions.
- Strong analytical and report‑writing skills.
- Excellent communication and facilitation abilities for multi‑stakeholder engagement.
